Congratulations Madison Coolbaugh - State Champion!
The Borough of Berwick congratulates Madison Coolbaugh for recently winning the Elks Pennsylvania State Soccer Kick Championship. Madison won the 10 and under division, defeating other young soccer stars from all across the state of Pennsylvania. Madison went on to take 4th place in the United States Mid-Atlantic Championships, where she competed against kids from Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Kentucky, Michigan, New Jersey, Delaware, Maryland, and Washington, D.C.
Madison, daughter of Berwick Fire Chief Bill Coolbaugh and Fire Board Secretary Bridget Coolbaugh, first competed in the Berwick Elks Soccer Kick competition. Upon winning that competition, Madison went on to win the district championship against competitors from other local schools. Upon winning the district title, Madison competed in the Pennsylvania State Championship 10 & Under tournament, where she defeated the best competition the state had to offer. She rounded out the skills tournaments by placing 4th at the United States Mid Atlantic Championships.
Attached, you can view photographs of Madison as she competed in each tournament. The Borough Council and Mayor, at the April 2010 Council meeting, awarded Madison with a beautiful plaque in appreciation of her efforts and accomplishments. Great job Madison! Your hard work has truly paid off. May you keep on kicking!

Borough Manager Inducted to Beta Gamma Sigma International Honor Society
Congratulations to Borough Manager Shane Pepe on his induction to the Bloomsburg University Chapter of Beta Gamma Sigma. Shane has been working on his Masters of Business Administration since 2008. Shane attended the ceremony with his wife Bethany and parents Robert and Susan.
Beta Gamma Sigma is the international honor society serving business programs accredited by AACSB International - The Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business. Membership in Beta Gamma Sigma is the highest recognition a business student anywhere in the world can receive in a business program accredited by AACSB International. The top 10% of undergraduate business students and top 20% of Masters-level students are eligible to be selected to this organization.
History of Beta Gamma Sigma

The Birth of Honor
In the spring of 1907, a group of commerce students at the University of Wisconsin received permission from the faculty to organize a commerce honor society, which they called Beta Gamma Sigma. The purpose of the Society was to encourage and reward scholarship and accomplishment in the field of business studies among commerce students at the University. At about the same time, students at the University of Illinois and the University of California felt the need for such an organization on their campuses and respectively organized Delta Kappa Chi (1910) and The Economics Club (1906). In 1913, having become aware of their coexistence and common purpose, representatives of the three societies met at Madison, Wisconsin, to consummate a merger which made Beta Gamma Sigma into a national organization.
Action was initiated in 1919 to establish Beta Gamma Sigma as the only scholastic honor society recognized by the American Assembly of Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB). This organization, which was renamed AACSB International - The Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business, includes in its membership collegiate schools of business that meet high standards of eligibility required of accredited member institutions with respect to curricula, teaching staff, teaching loads, library and laboratory facilities. Beta Gamma Sigma amended its constitution in 1921 to restrict the installation of new chapters to collegiate schools of business which are accredited members of AACSB International.

Borough Newsletters
The Borough of Berwick has begun providing the citizens of our Borough with semi-annual newsletters. The idea of the newsletter came about for a number of reasons. First and foremost, the Borough Government felt that citizens in our Borough needed to be provided with information that was useful and informative. Also, many of our citizens do not have internet or purchase a newspaper. Therefore, they are missing out on a lot of the information they need to know about our community. Lastly, there is a lot of information that the newspaper just doesn't print. The idea also helps the Borough comply with PA Act 101, which is a DEP mandate to educate citizens at least twice per year regarding Recycling. A portion of each newsletter is dedicated solely for this purpose.
The Borough will hand deliver each newsletter to your doorstep. Expect a Spring and a Fall newsletter. We will also post each newsletter on the Borough website. Let us know if there is any specific type of information that you would like to see on our newsletters!

Congratulations Bulldogs!
Congratulations to the Berwick Bulldogs Baseball Team. The Berwick Senior High School Baseball Team won the PIAA Class AAA State Baseball Championships on June 13th in Altoona. The journey to a state championship began when this group of boys was 13 and 14 years old, when they took 2nd place in the Pennsylvania Little League Junior Division State Championships. Through hard work and great coaching from Coach Brian Pinterich and his staff, as well as the support of the entire Berwick community, these boys made Berwick proud. They are the first baseball team to win a State Championship in school history. They join a long list of past state champions, including the two-time national championship football team.
